01. Break of Dawn

Music & Lyrics Ad van Meurs and Ankie Keultjes

I don’t care how old I am
Don’t care if it’s us or them
Because I’m walking home in love again

I saw your longing eyes
And I dropped my disguise
So sudden suddenly in love again

chorus

Hear those birds
I know their tone
Oh they join me here
Now I’m walking home
Hear those birds
In the early morn
Oh I love their singing
Just for me alone
It’s six o’clock at the break of dawn

So love just seemed an illusion
I was locked up in confusion
With mixed up feelings so hard to show

I got closer to the edge
In my head that same old pledge
Who’s gonna take me of this lonesome road

I’m walking by the river
See a paper’s been delivered
It’s heading only fire and flames

But the world is as light as a feather
And I don’t feel the weather
Because everything is calling out your name

02. Homesick Blues

Words& music: Ad van Meurs

Look out this window
It’s summer again
Through this window I see the summers of way back when
Oh lordie Lord
If only sometimes we could choose
All I’ve got is to surrender to another homesick blues

Look out the window
That’s our old place
My dad’s friendly look and my sister’s stubborn face
Oh lordie Lord
Kennedy is on the news
All I’ve got is to surrender to another homesick blues

Look at the window
That’s the old me
Somewhat naive but boy, was I free
Oh Lordie Lord
Unaware of future dues
All I’ve got is to surrender to another homesick blues

Look out the window
I see a summer dress
Her hand picking flowers and her eyes saying yes
Oh lordie Lord
Now tears are falling on my shoes
All’

Look out the window
My old friends
A guitar, a smoke or two and the party’d never end
Oh lordie Lord
We thought we’d never lose
All I’ve got is to surrender to another homesick blues

03. Between the Lines

Music & Lyrics Ad van Meurs and Ankie Keultjes

I’ll walk with you as far as you want me to
I’ll talk to you as long as you want me to
I’ll listen when you’re sad
And I’ll drink to you when you’re mad
But I’ll read between the lines
When you say it’s all over

I’ll wait for you on every next corner
And I’ll look for you when you’re lost and under
And I’ll pray for you when you’re down
And I’ll laugh about that silly frown
But I’ll read between the lines
When you say it’s all over

And I’ll hope for you when the skies get darker
And when you’re losing track I’ll be your marker
And I’ll look away when you’re to blame
Because I know for me you’ll do the same
But I’ll read between the lines
When you say it’s all over

05. The Big Ocean

Music & Lyrics Ad van Meurs

I’m looking down the coastline
Standing on the pier
I see a distant sail
Got the pulse of the planet right down in my ear
I think I hear this tale

Chorus:
All there is, is to sail the ocean
Fare with the wind and waves
We go fast, we go slow, up and down as we go
And the shore is a faraway notion, sail, sail the big ocean

I’m hopeful for the future, thankful for the past
Always a storm coming near
But if you hold the helm I’ll pull the rope, I’ll climb the mast
We will face all fears’

Sometimes you lose, sometimes you win
Sometimes you just need to hide
And there is only direction and there are odds and there are winds
Do keep an eye on the tide

And I know, yes I know, we’re waiting
For things that might never show
But the voyage is a game, the arrival not the aim
So we swing and we sway with the motion
Sail, sail the big ocean

Ankie Keultjes: vocals
Marjan Cornille: guitar/vocals

06. Dover

Words & Music: Ad van Meurs and Ankie Keultjes

Stranded at the port of Dover
All is silent, the fog won’t go
No ferryman will ever bring us over
So we wait, quiet, in a world white as snow

It gives me peace of mind when I hear you talking
Words like pearls, silver rain
So much peace of mind when I hear you talking
Words like coffee, like wisdom, like colours over grey

So lonely out here, everybody lonely everywhere

We hang around, in and out the car
Feel like actors without pay
Soon we’ll enter that strange belly
Of the metal whale that’ll bring us all the way to Calais

Décor is changing, seagulls start screaming
Some sort of sun breaking through
Next part will reveal the meaning
Of struggle for life, sanity, this me, this you

So peaceful out here
Anybody peaceful anywhere?

08. The Emigrant

Words & music: Ad van Meurs

Dreaming of a far off land
Lonesome blues, walking shoes
Drinking with my friends
in the bar all night through
Till I know who I am
Dreaming of a far off land

Hear the whisper in the wind
The language of all flowers
Comes to you like friend
In your weary hour
When you’re down and out it’s then,
You’ll hear the whisper in the wind

I’ll come back and marry you
When my fight is over,
Walked the mile in style
As the wildest rover
Bring you all four leaves of the humble clover,
I’ll do
I’ll come back and marry you

Ad van Meurs: guitars, vocal
Marjan Cornille: guitar, vocal
Ankie Keultjes: vocal
Sjoerd van Bommel: drums
Theo Wijdeven: double bass

09. Won’t you try

Words & Music by Marjan Cornille

The night time is falling
as I lie here in my room
I hope the light of dawn
won’t come too soon

I hear the sound of your laughter
although you fall apart
You tell me it’s too late to give in to
the seasons of your heart

chorus

Won’t you try to read the signs
Won’t you walk along with me
cause a back road is something
you can choose to see

I love the poet inside you
But now I want to see the clown
Or the child looking for it’s mother
With his head bowed down

I think about the days
That I spent with you
You tell me not to hold on to
The times we once knew

Marjan Cornille: vocals guitar
Sjoerd van Bommel: drums
Theo Wijdeven: double bass
Ankie keultjes: vocals
Ad van Meurs: guitar

10. The Things

Music & Lyrics: Ad van Meurs

I don’t remember the church, just my ball that hit it
Boom, boom all those summer afternoons, yes I admit
I don’t remember the school, just the clouds in the sky
Big white promises always catching my eye

Chorus:
Where I walk in this town I see
They’re tearing down half a century
So what is shallow, what is deep’
The things we throw away, the things we keep

The girl that left me, not the one I left, and the one that
looked straight through me while I was talking deft
Not the cold war running but the marching band
Not the killing machine but the pilot’s waving hand

No ideal, no goals in life
But three dog faces, and how you cried
One little thing keeps coming back,
That tiny little drum fill in "Baby’s in Black"

Ad van Meurs: guitar, vocal
Ankie Keultjes: vocals
Marjan Cornille: guitar/vocals
Sjoerd van Bommel: drums/percussion, harmonica
Theo Wijdeven: double bass

11. Born by the River

Words & music: Ad van Meurs & Ankie Keultjes

I was born by the river, born by the river
after the war people came from afar telling us we had to move away

I married by the river
then the river turned wild when I had my second child,
and the world went astray

Now I tell them about the river
About the stream of love that comes from above but they don’t believe what I say

Now I’m cursing the river
They are on the other side with hate on their minds
for them to my God I pray

Now I’m waiting by the river
there is nothing we can lose but I’m waiting for the news that might bring them back one day

Ad van Meurs: guitar
Ankie Keultjes: vocal
Marjan Cornille: vocal
Sjoerd van Bommel: drums

12. The Holy Oak

Music & Lyrics:Ankie Keultjes and Ad van Meurs

On a day in early springtime
All of nature held it’s breath
There was a man who had no answer
He walked along a muddy path

It brought him to a quiet chapel
The Virgin of the Holy Oak
He walked inside with all his sorrow
This is how to him she spoke

I’ve asked the clouds to hide the sun’s warmth
To leave the water icy cold
Forbid the birds to build a nest
I’ve asked the leaves not to unfold

The ice was cracking neath his dog’s paw
While he walked along the path
A stirling’s song cut through the silence
All he felt was grief and wrath

Then she made him look into the mirror
Of the water dark and deep
He saw a chrystal clear reflection
And felt the wind of wisdom sweep

It swept away his troubled memories
The blinding mist of a bitter creed
And by the dark pond near the chapel
A man came back upon his feet
And by the dark pond near the chapel
A man came back upon his feet

Ankie Keultjes: vocals
Marjan Cornille: guitar/vocals
Sjoerd van Bommel: drums/percussion

13. Living in a Waitingroom

Words & music: Ad van Meurs

We’re living in a waiting room
Living in a kinda gloom
The real thing’s coming soon
It might happen every day

Anytime, partytime
I’ll be yours, you’ll be mine
That’s the way to kill the time
Not thinking of today

Money is given, sure
Don’t know what I need it for
Shall I keep it save it or
Drink it all away

We’re living in a waiting room
See the sun, see the moon
Real thing’s coming soon,
Every day

Never small, never tall
Living in waiting hall
Talk talk, do nothing at all
Don’t dare to pray

Never win never lose
Kinda worried and confused
Keep it down with the booze
And we’re not afraid

Takes a while to find a friend
He’s sitting at the other end
Of the room and seems to tend
To be the very same

Television baby food
Every day chopped and chewed
Isn’t real isn’t true
But fits in your brain

Sitting still and dream a life
Dream along from nine to five
You’re not alone, it’s pretty rife
What can I say

Ad van Meurs: vocal, guitar
Marjan Cornille: guitar
Ankie Keultjes: vocal
Siard de Jong: violin
Sjoerd van Bommel: drums
Theo Wijdeven: double bass

14. Peaceful Day

Music & Lyrics:Ad van Meurs

I go from Nashville down to Memphis
There ain’t much to see
So I roll down the window
To this new kind of free
And the old days of grief
And sorrow have gone
And the first peaceful day
Of the year’s about to come

Well love was fear
Love was a beast
There ain’t much to do
Now love is clear
And love is a feast
And a laugh or two
And here come the birds
That welcome the morn
And the first peaceful day
Of the year is born

Go down to the river
Follow it’s curly flow
Go down the Mississippi
It tells you where to go

And here we are now at Rices
I’ve been here many times
And the sudden breeze
And the blue skies
They make a perfect rhyme
And deep inside
There’s a true soul alive
And the first peaceful day
Of the year has arrived
The first peaceful day
Of the year has arrived
